Leith Kassier BMus is a qualified piano teacher. Leith graduated from Rhodes University with a first class music degree and studied piano and teaching methods with Betty Shuttleworth.
For over twenty years she has specialised in teaching the piano to a wide range of pupils of all ages and abilities, and has devised a highly individualised, pupil-centred method which brings out the best in each student. Performance skills are developed through participation in local music festivals and concerts. Music exams are also encouraged as part of a wide-ranging general education and Leith's students have been successful up to Grade 8 and Diploma level. Many students have gone on to win places at music college and university and become professional musicians. Some pupils, however, simply want to play for their own pleasure and development and these are encouraged along these lines too.
At the heart of Leith’s method is the belief that finding the right music for the right person at the right time is the key to staying enthusiastic about practising! This means that some children will be concentrating on jazz pieces for a time whilst others are concentrating on classical pieces, but hopefully they will all get to play Bach when they are ready! Leith also believes that knowledge of theory and music analysis enhance appreciation of music. These are integrated into the lessons and in some cases lead to the higher qualifications necessary for the more advanced examinations.
